Why do the British say Alright & Hiya?
Why do British people say things like Alright & Hiya in place of what ESL students are taught?
Basically, the British are lazy, if we can find a way to say more with less words, we will. Both Alright & Hiya are saying the same thing, Hello, How Are You? But unlike the formal way of saying it, we are not actually expecting any form of meaningful reply. In fact, if the person saying it to you is a close friend, you don’t actually need to reply at all beyond nodding your head.
